BBB Review Removal for Negative Reviews and Complaints

The Better Business Bureau verifies every customer review and complaint with the business before it goes live, which gives you a real dispute window most owners miss. We dispute the reviews that are not from genuine customers, defamatory or in breach of BBB's rules, answer complaints so they close in your favor, and pursue defamation with our US legal partners where a case needs it.

Which BBB Reviews And Complaints Qualify

The BBB does not delete reviews or complaints because a business asks. It acts when its own criteria are not met. These are the cases where a dispute has a real chance, and the one where it does not.

Not A Real Customer

BBB reviews must describe a marketplace experience with your business. When you cannot find the transaction, the BBB asks the submitter to substantiate it, and an unverified review does not stay published.

Competitors, Employees And Relatives

BBB rules exclude reviews from competitors, current or former employees, and anyone with a personal relationship to the business. Employment disputes are not consumer complaints and are rejected on that basis.

Defamatory Statements Of Fact

A review that accuses you of fraud, theft or breaking the law without basis is a false statement of fact, not an opinion. The BBB will not rule on truth, so this route runs through our US legal partners.

Rule Breaches

Profanity, threats, personal information about staff, matters already in litigation, and reviews about a different business all breach BBB's review and complaint standards and can be disputed on that ground.

Complaints That Do Not Belong

BBB complaints are limited to marketplace disputes. A complaint that is really a pricing argument, a legal threat, an employment matter or a duplicate of one already filed can be challenged before it counts against your rating.

What Does Not Qualify

A real customer with a real grievance, however small, has a valid review and a valid complaint. Those are not removal cases. They are response cases, and answering them properly is what moves the rating.

How A BBB Engagement Works

Four stages. You see the assessment and the quote before any work starts, and every engagement is covered by an NDA.

1

Profile Assessment

A specialist reads your BBB business profile, separates customer reviews from complaints, checks each against BBB's rules and your records, and sends a private report with honest odds for every item.

2

Quote And Approval

We quote for the reviews and complaints that qualify, and for the complaint-response work if the rating is the problem. You approve the scope before we start. There is no payment for the assessment.

3

Disputes, Responses And Notices

Reviews are disputed through your BBB business account with the evidence the local BBB needs. Complaints get a response that satisfies BBB's closure criteria. Defamatory items go to our legal partners for a notice to the author.

4

Monitoring And Reinforcement

We watch the profile for new reviews and complaints so each one is verified or answered inside the window, and we start review generation so genuine customers carry the profile.

What The Better Business Bureau Is, And Is Not

BBB review removal only makes sense once you know what the Better Business Bureau is: a network of private, non-profit organizations operating across the United States and Canada. Each local BBB maintains profiles for businesses in its region, whether or not the business ever engaged with it. A profile shows a letter rating from A+ down to F, an accreditation status, customer reviews and a complaint history, and it tends to rank well in Google for your company name plus "BBB" or "complaints".

Accreditation is voluntary and paid. An accredited business agrees to BBB's standards and gets the seal; a non-accredited business still gets a profile and a rating. Accreditation does not remove negative content and the BBB is explicit that it does not.

Reviews and complaints are different things

This is the distinction most owners miss. A customer review is a star rating with text, positive or negative. A complaint is a formal dispute that the BBB forwards to the business and expects to be resolved. Reviews do not factor into the letter rating. Complaints do: the number of complaints, whether the business responded, whether the complaints were resolved, and how long the business took all feed the rating, alongside time in business, transparency, licensing and any government actions. So a profile can carry several negative reviews and still hold an A rating, while a handful of unanswered complaints can drag it down on their own.

How the BBB verifies a review before it posts

Unlike open platforms, the BBB verifies both sides before a review goes public. The submitter confirms their email address and affirms that the review describes a genuine marketplace experience. The BBB then sends the review to the business, which has a window to confirm the interaction or to dispute it, for example because there is no record of the customer, the author is a competitor or employee, or the matter is in litigation. Only after that does the review publish, and the business can respond publicly once it does.

That window is where most BBB review removal actually happens. A review from someone who never bought from you is caught before it posts, provided someone is watching the profile and answers the BBB in time. Reviews that already slipped through can still be disputed, but the evidence has to be stronger.

How complaints are closed

When a complaint is filed, the BBB forwards it and asks for a response within a set number of days. The business can resolve it, offer a response the customer rejects, or ignore it. Each complaint then shows a status on the profile: resolved, answered, unanswered or unresolved. Unanswered is the one that hurts, because it signals that the business does not engage with customers at all. A complaint that does not meet BBB's criteria, because it is really an employment matter, a legal dispute, a duplicate, or not about a marketplace transaction, can be challenged and may be closed without counting against you.

Our Approach: Dispute What Is Wrong, Answer What Is Real

We act on content that is fake, defamatory or breaks the BBB's rules, and we are honest about the rest. For each review we look for the transaction in your records. No transaction means a dispute on the ground that the author is not a customer. A pattern that points to a competitor or an ex-employee means a dispute on conflict of interest. A false accusation of criminal conduct goes to our legal partners for a cease-and-desist to the author; US law largely shields the platform, so the legal route runs against the reviewer, not the BBB.

For complaints we do something different. Most BBB rating problems are not fake complaints, they are real complaints nobody answered. A factual, courteous response that documents what the business offered moves a complaint from unanswered to answered, and a fair offer often moves it to resolved. Doing that for the backlog, and then inside the window for every new complaint, is usually what lifts a C to an A over the following months. Complaints and reviews stay on a BBB profile for a fixed period of years, so the sooner the pattern changes, the sooner the profile reflects it.

When Removal Is Not The Answer

A genuine negative review from a genuine customer is not coming down, and we will tell you that in the assessment. The answer then is suppression in the honest sense: a public response that shows the next reader how you handle problems, and a review generation program so genuine positive reviews on the BBB, Google and elsewhere outweigh the complaints. Where a BBB profile is one of several negative results for your company name, our negative search result removal service deals with the search page as a whole.

The same split runs through all our review work. Start at the negative review removal hub, or go straight to the sister pages for Google reviews, Trustpilot, Yelp, Glassdoor and the wider set of complaint sites. US businesses that want the BBB handled as part of a broader program can start from our USA reputation management page, and the construction review defense case study shows how a long review cleanup has played out for a client.

Why Choose Online Reputation Manage for BBB Review Removal?

  • We Know The BBB Process

Reviews are verified before posting, complaints are closed by status, and the rating follows complaints, not reviews. We work the process the BBB actually runs.

  • US Legal Partners For Defamation

Defamatory reviews go to attorneys who work in US defamation law, with a notice to the author rather than a complaint to the platform that will not rule on truth.

  • Honest Odds Before You Pay

The assessment tells you which items qualify, which are genuine feedback to answer, and what the rating problem actually is. You approve the quote first.

  • NDA With Every Client

Every enquiry is confidential and every engagement is covered by an NDA. Your cleanup never becomes its own story.

  • Complaint Responses That Close

We draft responses that satisfy BBB closure criteria and your own position, inside the window, for the backlog and for every new complaint.

  • Monitoring After The Cleanup

A review that posts because nobody answered the BBB's verification email is the most avoidable loss there is. We watch the profile so it does not happen.

BBB Review Removal Questions

Can you guarantee a BBB review or complaint will be removed?
No. The BBB decides whether a review or complaint meets its criteria, and a court decides whether a statement is defamatory. We only take on items we believe qualify, give you honest odds for each one in the assessment, and let you approve the quote before any work starts.
Does the BBB delete negative reviews if the business asks?
No, and we will not tell you otherwise. The BBB removes a review when the submitter cannot be verified, when the business shows the author is not a customer or has a conflict of interest, or when the content breaks BBB's rules. A genuine negative review from a genuine customer stays, and the right move is a public response.
Do BBB customer reviews affect my BBB rating?
Reviews do not feed the letter rating. Complaints do, together with whether and how quickly you respond, whether they are resolved, time in business, transparency and any government actions. If your rating is the problem, the fix is almost always complaint handling, not review removal.
What is the difference between a BBB review and a BBB complaint?
A review is a star rating and comment that other consumers read. A complaint is a formal dispute the BBB forwards to you and tracks to closure, with a public status of resolved, answered, unanswered or unresolved. Both are verified with the submitter, and both give the business a chance to respond or dispute.
Can I dispute a BBB review that is already published?
Yes. The business account lets you dispute a published review, and the BBB will ask the submitter to substantiate the experience if you can show there is no record of them as a customer or that the review breaks a rule. The evidence has to be stronger than for a review still in the pre-publication window, which is why monitoring matters.
Is it worth suing over a defamatory BBB review?
Sometimes. A false statement of fact, such as an accusation of fraud, is actionable against the author in US defamation law, and a cease-and-desist from our legal partners often produces a retraction without a suit. An opinion, however harsh, is protected, and we will tell you when a review is one so you do not spend on a notice that goes nowhere.
How long does a BBB dispute or complaint response take?
The BBB works to its own windows for verification and complaint responses, and a dispute on a published review depends on how quickly the submitter replies. We report progress at each step and will not quote a number of days before the assessment. Rating improvements from complaint handling show over the following months.
Does accreditation help remove negative content?
No. Accreditation is a paid, voluntary membership that signals you meet BBB standards. It does not remove reviews or complaints and the BBB says so plainly. Whether to accredit is a separate decision from cleaning up the profile, and we can talk both through in the assessment.
