When One Viral "Scam" Thread Takes Over Every Brand Search

A multi-city home-services company had a single viral forum thread, titled with the word "scam", ranking near the top of every search for its name, with complaint-portal listings filling the results around it. Across more than a year of monthly work we tracked six variants of their branded search, suppressed the complaint portals on most of them, and contained the thread below the results customers actually see. The client's identity, as always, stays confidential.

The Setup

This case study is anonymized like every one we publish: the numbers come from the monthly position reports the client received, and the identifying details do not. The client is a home-services company operating in multiple Indian metros. Their problem was the most common shape of reputation damage there is: one angry viral post, amplified by complaint portals, sitting on page 1 for every variation of the brand name, including the spelling variants and city searches their customers actually type.

The Challenge and the Work

A thread you cannot simply delete

The viral post lived on a major community forum, where removal is rarely possible and clumsy intervention backfires. The strategy was containment: strengthen everything around it so the thread lost its page-1 slots on search after search, while duplicate complaint-portal pages, which can be moved, were suppressed outright.

Six searches, not one

Customers searched the brand as one word, two words, with "review" and "reviews", and with city names attached. Each variant had its own page 1 and its own negatives, so each was tracked separately in the monthly report, with before-and-after positions for every link.

The result: the reviews searches came backOutcome

Complaint-portal listings were suppressed beyond the visible results on four of the six tracked searches, the competitor-steering Q&A thread disappeared, and the viral post was contained below the fold on the searches that drive bookings. Monthly tracking continues, because containment holds only as long as someone is watching.
