Why Is ChatGPT Saying Negative Things About My Company?

Why Is ChatGPT Saying Negative Things About My Company?

Why is ChatGPT saying negative things about my company? Because ChatGPT does not form an opinion about you. It assembles one on the spot from whatever public material is most visible and most repeated, and if the loudest thing about your name is a complaints thread, a two-year-old news story or a cluster of angry reviews, ChatGPT will compress that into a verdict and deliver it politely, every time, to everyone who asks. This post walks through the five places a negative answer usually comes from, why incorrect or outdated claims keep showing up, and what a ChatGPT reputation management fix actually involves.

Why is ChatGPT saying negative things about my company at all?

ChatGPT is now the first place many buyers, recruiters, journalists and investors ask about a name. They do not scan ten blue links and form their own view. They read one confident paragraph, and that paragraph often decides whether they ever reach your website.

The paragraph is built from two layers. Model memory is a frozen snapshot of the public web learned during training, which only changes when OpenAI ships an update. Live retrieval is what happens when ChatGPT browses, runs a search and reads the pages that come back. A negative answer can come from either layer, and a fix that only addresses one of them tends to relapse.

Which sources are usually behind a negative ChatGPT answer?

In our audits, a damaging sentence almost always traces back to one of these.

1. A page that already ranks for your name. A negative article, a complaints board thread or a scraped profile on page one of Google or Bing is the single biggest reason an answer goes wrong. 2. A Reddit, Quora or forum thread. ChatGPT quotes Reddit unusually often because threads read as first-hand experience. One old thread can outlive the issue it described by years. 3. A cluster of reviews. Google, Glassdoor, Trustpilot and marketplace reviews get summarised directly. Five fake one-star reviews from the same device become "customers report poor service". 4. Old news coverage. A dispute that was settled, an investigation that was dropped, or a story about a different company with a similar name. ChatGPT rarely carries the correction unless the correction is easy to find. 5. A broken entity record. If your Wikidata entry, knowledge panel, registry listing and website disagree about who you are, the model can quietly merge you with someone else and inherit their problems.

Our post on what sources ChatGPT trusts about a company goes into how each of these is weighed.

Why is ChatGPT giving incorrect information about my company?

Three reasons, and they need different fixes.

  • The information was once true. An old office address, a former director, a product you discontinued. The web still says it in enough places that the model repeats it. The fix is to update the sources and make the current facts easier to find than the old ones.
  • The information was never true. A fake review, a defamatory forum post, an article that named you by mistake. Here the content itself has to be challenged through the platform's reporting route, the publisher, or where it genuinely applies, the law.
  • The model is guessing. When your own site does not state the facts plainly, ChatGPT fills the gap from whatever third-party page it finds. The fix is answer-ready pages, structured data and consistent naming so there is nothing left to guess.

Can I just ask OpenAI to change the answer?

No, and you should be careful with anyone who claims otherwise. Nobody can log into ChatGPT and rewrite what it says about a brand. The model is not editable, and it refreshes on its own schedule. What is editable is the evidence underneath: the search results, the reviews, the articles, the entity records and the structured data. That is the only layer that holds up over time, and it is the layer all serious AI search reputation management work happens on.

Does this affect small companies, or only big brands?

Smaller companies are often hit harder. A large brand has thousands of pages, reviews and articles, so one bad thread is diluted. A firm with forty reviews and two news mentions has no such cushion: a single complaints-board post can be the most detailed page on the web about it, and ChatGPT treats detail as signal. In our experience the companies most surprised by a negative answer are regional businesses, clinics, developers and professional practices whose owners never searched their own name in an assistant until a customer mentioned it.

Why does one screenshot of a bad answer prove very little?

ChatGPT answers slightly differently every time it is asked, and differently again with browsing on or off. A single screenshot from a worried colleague is a signal, not a diagnosis. The right first step is a structured audit: run the questions your customers really type, your name alone, your name with your company, "is it legit", "is it safe", comparisons with competitors, and the awkward questions your sales team already hears. Record every answer and every citation. Only then do you know which pages are doing the damage and whether they are removable, suppressible or simply outdated.

What does fixing it look like in practice?

The work runs in order. Audit the answers across every mode. Trace each damaging claim to the specific pages that produced it. Remove false, fake, defamatory and policy-violating content through the right channel. Where removal is not possible, build and promote accurate material that outranks the negative source. Publish the facts about you in a form machines can read without guessing. Then re-run the answers on a schedule, because models refresh at different times and a fixed answer can drift back. The step-by-step version is in our guide to how to change what ChatGPT says about your brand, and our older piece on how to remove negative links from Google covers the search-result side. OpenAI's own explanation of how ChatGPT search works is worth reading alongside it.
